چکیده

This paper approaches from an optimal control perspective the problem of fixed-time detection of mobile radioactive sources in transit by means of a collection of mobile sensors. Under simplifying assumptions on the motion and geometry of the source, the sensors, and the surrounding environment, the optimal control problem admits an intuitive, analytic closedform solution. This solution is obtained thanks to analytic expressions for bounds on the probabilities of detection and false alarm for a Neyman-Pearson detection test. The intuition derived from this analytic solution supports the development of a motion control law that steers (suboptimally) the sensors to a given neighborhood of the suspected source, while navigating among stationary obstacles in their environment. This motion controller closes the loop at the acceleration level of a heterogeneous collection of sensor platforms. Experimental studies with these platforms corroborate the theoretical convergence results.

Detection of Weak Radioactive Sources using Mobile Sensors with Positional Uncertainties

This paper formulates an optimal steering law for mobile sensors with positional uncertainties using stochastic maximum principle and establishes the effect of these uncertainties on the decision making accuracy of the sensor network. The goal is to decide if a target is carrying a weak radioactive source using a network of mobile sensors with noisy motion. The interplay between the mobility of...

Sensor Management Problems of Nuclear Detection

Terrorist nuclear attack is a potentially devastating threat to homeland security. It is increasingly important to have the capability to intercept illicit nuclear materials entering the country and to monitor for nuclear threats emerging from within. This article describes a variety of approaches to sensor management in a multi-institution project on nuclear detection, which is based at Rutger...

An Evolutionary Algorithm Based on a Hybrid Multi-Attribute Decision Making Method for the Multi-Mode Multi-Skilled Resource-constrained Project Scheduling Problem

This paper addresses the multi-mode multi-skilled resource-constrained project scheduling problem. Activities of real world projects often require more than one skill to be accomplished. Besides, in many real-world situations, the resources are multi-skilled workforces. In presence of multi-skilled resources, it is required to determine the combination of workforces assigned to each activity. H...

Networked Decision Making for Poisson Processes: Application to nuclear detection

This paper addresses a detection problem where several spatially distributed sensors independently observe a time-inhomogeneous stochastic process. The task is to decide between two hypotheses regarding the statistics of the observed process at the end of a fixed time interval. In the proposed method, each of the sensors transmits once to a fusion center a locally processed summary of its infor...
